The 2023 Tornado Season is off to an active start, with 543 tornadoes reported as of April 17. 475 of those occurred in January, February, and March, making it the most active 3-month start to the year on record. (The old record was 398 tornadoes, set in the first three months of 2017). As shown in the chart below, the average number of tornadoes through this point in the year is around 366.
There were 47 lives lost due to tornadoes in March alone. In comparison, there were only 23 deaths in all of 2022 from tornadoes. On March 24, over 20 people were killed from a tornado outbreak in the Deep South, including 16 fatalities in Rolling Fork, Mississippi. A week later, on March 31, over 160 tornadoes were reported across the Midwest and South, making it one of the most active days for tornadoes on record.
Illinois leads the country in tornado reports this year, followed closely by Alabama. California, which saw only five tornadoes in 2022, has already had seven so far this year. The map below shows the average number of tornadoes per year by state. Illinois and Alabama have already surpassed their yearly average with eight months still to go.
April, May and June are the three most active months in terms of tornadoes. During May and June, the highest threat shifts west into the Central and Southern Plains. Most of these areas have not seen much severe weather yet this season. As a whole, April has been fairly quiet, but that could change this week with another strong low pressure system set to track across the country.
