Large parts of the eastern United States have seen abnormally warm temperatures over the past ten days, leading to numerous records being broken. Boston has hit 60° twice this month (February 10 and 16), setting new record high temperatures for both of those days. International Falls, Minnesota hit 45° on February 12 and 13, setting daily records. New York City, Sault Ste. Marie, Green Bay, and Louisville are among the cities that have set record high temperatures over the past few days. But it hasn’t just been a week or two of unusual warmth. 2023 is off to a warm start across a good portion of the country. Boston, Providence, Richmond, Alpena, Syracuse, and Philadelphia are just a few of the cities that are experiencing one of the top 5 warmest years on record to date.

A cold front moving quickly across the country will bring severe weather to the mid-South Thursday afternoon and sweep out this unseasonable warmth. The low pressure system associated with this cold front has produced a swath of heavy snow from Denver to Milwaukee.

A handful of snow totals from the system are listed below.

Trinidad, CO: 10”

Lincoln, NE: 10”

Omaha: 8”

Colby, KS: 8”

Hastings, NE: 6.5”

Pueblo, CO: 6”

Denver International Airport: 3.6”

While the east has been warm, the western part of the country has been much cooler. Several locations in California saw record low temperatures Thursday morning, including Concord, Santa Rosa, and Monterey. Montgomery Field in San Diego saw its lowest temperature since February 5, 2020. Alamosa, Colorado also set a record low of -23°. Several locations in Wyoming dipped into the double digits below zero Thursday morning, including Riverton and Jackson (-16°). Las Vegas even saw a trace of snow on Valentine’s Day. Many locations across the Pacific Northwest are running 2-4° below average for the month. These include Bakersfield, Sacramento, Medford, OR, and San Diego.

Temperatures should rebound across the East by the end of the weekend and begin the week above average. Precipitation should return to the West Coast as several systems move onshore. It’s beginning to look more likely that another storm will impact the Rockies and Upper Midwest next week. Check back in a few days for more details on this.
